IBM: Migrating to ext4

Not we are using this anywhere or in production, but it is useful to know that ext4 file system support is coming soon. Kernel 2.6.24+ adds experimental support already, so you're able to test with it. IBM has a little write up about migrating to ext4 ... which is surprisingly simple!

Project: Btrfs - new file system from Oracle

Linux has a wealth of file systems to choose from, but we are facing a number of challenges with scaling to the large storage subsystems that are becoming common in today's data centers. File systems need to scale in their ability to address and manage large storage, and also in their ability to detect, repair and tolerate errors in the data stored on disk. So Oracle is creating a new file system: btrfs. Read more...

ZFS, XFS and EXT4 filesystems compared

Found a nice article on a benchmark study of the new, modern file systems that are coming up. ZFS, XFS, and EXT4 file systems compared shows how ZFS, XFS and ext4 measure up against each other. Of course, there is no reference measurement of zero-line to compare against. But perhaps other benchmark studies can provide this...

Performance study of GFS an OCFS2

Last year, the Enterprise OpenSource Magazine website posted results of a performance study of several open source clustering file systems. The study was done in an academic environment and aimed to measure the same workloads on several different technologies. However, for the purposes of this blog, the difference between Red Hat's GFS and Oracle's OCFS2 are most interesting... Source: Kevin Closson
